It’s been announced that anthology sci-fi series METAL HURLANT CHRONICLES is to receive a prequel series (insomuch as unrelated stories actually can) to be entitled METAL HURLANT: ORIGINS, and will be overseen by Jamie Mathieson, the scriptwriter of FAQ ABOUT TIME TRAVEL, the next two episodes of DOCTOR WHO (MUMMY ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS and FLATLINE) and several episodes of BEING HUMAN.

Adapted from stories published in the seminal comic METAL HURLANT – which you may be more familiar with as HEAVY METAL – CHRONICLES ran for two seasons of six standalone episodes of around twenty minutes each (and was notable for the variably predictable twist endings of almost every one of them). ORIGINS, however, will consist of 45-minute episodes telling one serialised story, although just how many episodes there will be is unconfirmed at this stage. Also somewhat vague is what exactly the plot will be, but one interesting possibility is an expansion of the brief history behind the comet that soared past the world upon which each episode of CHRONICLES took place (“The last fragment of a once living planet, its body blasted into dust by the madness of its own inhabitants, while its head was cursed to roam endlessly through time and space, screaming in pain and sorrow.”)

Mathieson stated that “METAL HURLANT is an iconic comic and the wellspring from which a lot of fledgling UK comic talent took their inspiration. Without HEAVY METAL there would be no 2000 AD, no Judge Dredd and my childhood would be a much duller place. I am therefore immensely proud to have been invited to helm this redefinition of one small corner of the immensity that is the HEAVY METAL universe.

The series will go into production early next year and likely debut in September or October.
