In the gluten of comic book-based TV shows either currently on screens or in development, SUPERGIRL is one that has caught the eye of many. And now comes news that the show has found its titular heroine.

Melissa Benoist, best known for roles in GLEE and the Miles Teller-starring WHIPLASH, will be playing the lead role in CBS’ SUPERGIRL. The actress is believed to have beat out THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ Claire Holt and ONCE UPON A TIME’s Elizabeth Lail for the gig. If the whole GLEE thing concerns you, it may be worth pointing out that a certain Grant Gustin got his big break on that show before landing the part of a particular Scarlet Speedster.

The show will be based around the Man of Steel’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, also known as Kara Danvers in the series, as she begins to use her superpowers on Earth. Other familiar DC names set to appear are James Olsen, Hank Henshaw, Cat Grant, and Winslow Schott. Rumours suggest that the series may tie to the great DC Cinematic Universe, but that is all those stories are at this stage – rumours!

SUPERGIRL’s pilot has been penned by NO ORDINARY FAMILY’s Ali Adler and ARROW and THE FLASH’s Greg Berlanti, with both serving as executive producers on the series with Sarah Schechter for Warner Brothers TV. The show already has a full series commitment with CBS.
