One of the most attention-grabbing news stories of the past year to many was that Steve Alten’s MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror was to finally be adapted for the big screen. Well now comes some casting news for this adaptation.

Variety is reporting that The Loved Ones’ Jessica McNamee has been brought in to co-star alongside Jason Statham. Additionally, X-Men: Days of Future Past’s Fan Bingbing has joined the picture.

The current word on the MEG movie is that it will focus on an international underwater program that comes under threat from an ominous and mysterious danger. Unfortunately for the workers based on this facility, they will be stranded at the bottom of the ocean and with a dangerous predator waiting to pounce. Jason Statham will portray a former naval captain who is tasked with rescuing those in danger before it’s too late.

In case you’re not familiar with MEG, Steve Alten’s MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror was released in 1997 and has spawned several follows-up, with the action focussing on the 80-foot megalodon and the tale often described as “Jurassic Park with a shark” as the California coast is terrorized by this ancient threat.

The big screen MEG will be directed by National Treasure’s Jon Turtletaub and is currently set for a March 2nd, 2018 release.
