It looks as if the long-mooted Masters of the Universe movie could be close to finding a new director, with Deadline reporting that McG is in talks with Sony to helm the upcoming big screen He-Man feature.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s Jon M. Chu was originally on board to direct the movie, although he departed the project last year. Now McG, best known for Charlie’s Angels and that absolutely abysmal Terminator Salvation, is believed to be in negotiations for the gig. He’ll also oversee a rewrite of the draft screenplay that’s been put in place by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch.

Like so many favourites of the 1980s, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe originally began life as hugely popular Mattel toy line before becoming a successful cartoon series. The action would centre on Prince Adam of Eternia, and his alter-ego of the uber-powerful warrior named He-Man, as he battled nefarious bad guy Skeletor. So well-received was that series, it spawned its own spin-off cartoon, She-Ra: Princess of Power, before being given the big screen live-action treatment in the form of 1987’s Dolph Lundgren-starring Masters of the Universe.

This latest attempt to bring He-Man and his pals back to the big screen has been in development for years, with McG seemingly now the man to be tasked with the job.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
