Following on from the news that Pom Klementieff has been cast in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, now comes an interesting story on Matthew McConaughey.

Variety is reporting that McConaughey has recently turned down the chance to play the main villain in James Gunn’s sequel to last year’s massively enjoyable Guardians. No details are known on just who said villain is, but whoever it is, the role won’t be played by McConaughey.

This follows on from news earlier this year that the actor had indeed met with Marvel to discuss a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with some rumours even suggesting that he was being lined up to play Norman Osborn in one of the upcoming Spider-Man movies.

Whether this is it for McConaughey’s flirtation with the MCU remains to be seen, but an actor of his stature, appeal and ability would make a great addition to Marvel’s cinematic realm should the opportunity raise its head again somewhere down the line.

At present, Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set for a May 5th, 2017 release.
