The news came out of the network’s TCA presentation yesterday, with Ryan’s Constantine to appear in one episode of Arrow’s upcoming fourth season.
On the news, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim said, “We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of Arrow. Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to being John Constantine to Arrow and The CW’s DC Universe. It will be a well-deserved top of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of the series.”
Constantine, of course, was sadly cancelled earlier this year after just one season. The show impressed fans and critics alike, yet unfortunately didn’t manage to bring in the numbers that NBC was looking for given the considerable cost of putting the SFX-heavy show together. As Guggenheim said, Matt Ryan was fantastic in the role of John Constantine, and one of the biggest upsets about the show’s cancellation was that fans wouldn’t get to see the actor reprise a role that he was so great in. So it’s good news to know that we’ll get at least one more outing for Ryan’s Hellblazer.
It’s not been reported when in the series Constantine will appear, although the blurb has been released for his Arrow debut, which is reportedly an episode titled Haunted. The official word reads:
John Constantine is a weather worn exorcist and expert on the supernatural and the occult. He is a detective, magician, and a hunter of demons, and will provide critical support to Oliver when arrows aren’t enough.
Arrow returns to US screens on October 7th, with a UK return expected to follow shortly after.
