Ever since she debuted way back in Iron Man 2, there’s been regular speculation that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow could be getting her own solo movie or possibly a team-up effort alongside Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. Well, it now looks as if Johansson’s Natasha could be close to getting her chance to be front-and-centre in her own MCU outing.

Speaking to Deadline, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that the studio are “committing” to making a Black Widow solo movie at some point down the line. “We’ve announced the next nine movies, ten counting Civil War, through the end of 2019,” Feige explained. “Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned, I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow. We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise.”

After debuting in 2010’s Iron Man 2, Black Widow has gone on to appear in Avengers Assemble, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron and can currently be seen in Captain America: Civil War. Marvel Studios and Disney have regularly talked about having more female-led MCU entries, and Widow’s name is always one that comes up in that discussion. At present, the Carol Danvers-based Captain Marvel is set for a March 2019 release and Evangeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne will co-headline July 2018’s Ant-Man and The Wasp before that, and it now looks as if we may finally get to see Black Widow headline her own movie at some point in the future. Interestingly, Marvel Studios has confirmed release dates in 2020 for three mystery movies. Could it be that Widow nabs one of those spots?

As ever, expect more on this as and when it develops.
