Just what characters Marvel Studios and Disney will introduce to their cinematic universe has been the subject of much speculation over the last few years. With a further eleven movies confirmed up until 2019, including eight unconfirmed projects, chances are we’ll be seeing some new faces at some point. A couple of rumoured names that don’t seem to go away are those of Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Speaking to IGN, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was asked about those two particular characters being introduced to the MCU.

Feige said, “They’re both characters that we like, that development work has been done, it’s continuing to be done on, and certainly it’s the question I get asked more than anything else, more than IRON MAN 4, more than AVENGERS 3. That’s sort of the first time that’s really happened to us, so I think that makes a difference. I think that’s something we have to pay attention to. I’ve always said we have our plan, and it’s served us very well, and there hasn’t been anything that has managed to deviate or change from that based on an opinion, because opinions online change and they alter, and they are based on limited information they have to what’s going on behind the scenes, but in this particular case I think it is a groundswell, and I think it means something substantial.”

So it appears that Black Panther and Captain Marvel are two characters that fans have called out for, and Marvel are listening. Black Panther has been rumoured for years, with the likes of Morris Chestnut heavily linked to the part. As for Captain Marvel, it’s been made clear that Marvel and Disney have been looking to have a strong female lead in one of their upcoming movies. With them having previously said that this would be a new character, ruling out Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Carol Danvers would be an obvious choice to lead such a movie.

If recent stories are to be believed, it’s also been suggested that, starting with Scott Derrickson’s DOCTOR STRANGE, that Marvel are looking to stay away from standard origin stories for any new characters that they introduce.

Expect more on this as and when it develops.
