Whether it happens or not, we’ll have to see, but Mark Ruffalo has made it clear that he wants to head to a galaxy far, far away. Whilst J.J. Abrams is directing STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, the EPISODE VIII duties will be handled by LOOPER’s Rian Johnson. Ruffalo has revealed that he’s e-mailed Johnson direct to try and get a part in his STAR WARS movie.

Speaking to Collider, the actor revealed, “I just reached out to Rian recently, by the way. My e-mail to Rian after all these years was, ‘Rian, congratulations on everything you’ve been doing. And by the way, if there’s a part in STAR WARS, please, anything, please consider considering me to join you.’ I love hanging out with Rian so that is interesting to me, but I would like a role.”

The pair of Johnson and Ruffalo worked together on 2009’s THE BROTHERS BLOOM.

Since Ruffalo’s initial comments, Johnson himself took to Twitter, teasing, “I don’t know, Mark… @garywhitta tells me he has you booked up for the next 8 years on his Columbo franchise?”

Johnson’s comments jokingly refer to the fact that Gary Whitta, who happens to be penning the first STAR WARS spin-off movie, has been actively campaigning for a while now for Ruffalo to play the Columbo character made famous by Peter Falk.

As to whether Ruffalo does end up in EPISODE VIII, we’ll have to wait and see. He’s certainly got the chops for it, so it just depends if there’s any particular roles that would be suitable. But before any of that comes into sight, Abrams’ STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will be hitting screens on December 18th, 2015. EPISODE VIII will then hit in 2017.
