Whilst many moviegoers were hugely impressed by Ben Affleck’s Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman hasn’t fared so well with critics and fans alike. Either way, it looks as if a second straight-up solo movie is once again on the horizon for the Big Blue Scout.

Having debuted in Man of Steel before then taking centre-stage in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the jury is still largely out on this latest incarnation of the Last Son of Krypton. Before Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was even released, Warner Brothers made the ballsy move of already announcing a Man of Steel 2. When the first movie received a mixed reception and didn’t hit the box office figures that Warners were looking for, the studio was left with a decision: either make the embarrassing call to scrap Man of Steel 2, or look at a way to still continue ahead on an alternative route in order to save face… which is where Batman v Superman came from.

Given how Warner Brothers had a Superman-shaped hole when announcing a cinematic slate that included this month’s Suicide Squad, next year’s Justice League (which has since been streamlined from a two-part adventure to just a single movie), Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, James Wan’s Aquaman, Rick Famuyiwa’s The Flash, Green Lantern. Corps, an Affleck-helmed untitled Batman film, and even a movie for the ever-bland Cyborg, not to mention a rumoured outing for Booster Gold, it seemed as if the studio was maybe having some issues with what to do with Kal-El going forward. Well now comes word from The Wrap that a Man of Steel sequel is indeed back in development.

The outlet is reporting that another solo outing for Superman is an active project for Warner Brothers and that the studio sees the character as a major priority for The WB. With how one of comic books’ greatest heroes has been handled in recent years, some may be a little hesitant to see yet another film centred around Superman. What does give us some renewed hope of an accurate depiction of this legendary figure, however, is the recent news that Geoff Johns has been promoted to President of DC Entertainment and so will be overseeing the DC Extended Universe of movies. Johns is one of the most prolific and brilliant comic book writers of recent times, and his increased hands-on involvement with the DCEU will hopefully see a brighter future for fans of Superman should the Man of Steel indeed get another solo outing over the next few years.

Whilst Warner Brothers has a packed release slate of DC movies for the near future, interestingly they have two untitled DC movies booked in for October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019. Could it be that one of these pictures will wind up as a Superman movie? We’ll have to wait and see.

As ever, expect more on this as and when it develops. In the meantime, expect to see Henry Cavill’s Supes next November in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
