GAME OF THRONES star Maisie Williams will be swapping Needle for something a little more sonic as she boards the TARDIS for a guest role in DOCTOR WHO Series 9, the BBC have announced.

Renowned for her role as Arya Stark, 17 year-old Williams has also starred in one-off docu-drama CYBERBULLY and upcoming mystery THE FALLING, plus is heavily rumoured for the role of Ellie in the cinematic adaptation of THE LAST OF US.

On her first day on set, Williams said, “I’m so excited to be working on DOCTOR WHO as it’s such a big and important part of British Culture. I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we’ll be shooting not too far from my home town.”

Showrunner Steven Moffat added, “We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on DOCTOR WHO. It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

The typical Moffat hyperbole, then – but it’ll nonetheless be very interesting to find out more about Williams’ role.

But wait, there’s more already! The two episodes currently filming – and presumably the ones in which she appears – have been announced as ‘The Girl Who Died’ written by Jamie Mathieson and Steven Moffat, and ‘The Woman Who Lived’ by Catherine Tregenna, both period pieces. It’s very exciting to see Mathieson, who penned two of last year’s most popular episodes, return to the show, along with TORCHWOOD scribe Tregenna.

The episodes, directed by Ed Bazalgette, also star comedian and actor Rufus Hound (recently seen in Russell T. Davies’ CUCUMBER), alongside Tom Stourton (HORRIBLE HISTORIES), Ariyon Bakare, Simon Lipkin, Ian Conningham, Murray McArthur, Barnaby Kay, John Voce, and Struan Rodger.

Oh, and Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman. But you knew that.

DOCTOR WHO will return to BBC One this Autumn.
