News from The Tracking Board suggests that Warner Bros.’ drawn-out development of a LOGAN’S RUN redo is pulling a Rule 63 and ditching its male protagonist for a woman instead. Given the success of current blockbusters, including THE HUNGER GAMES and THE DIVERGENT SERIES, it makes plenty of financial sense. But therein lies the problem. Simply gender swapping doesn’t cut the proverbial mustard, and could easily reek of tokenistic pandering.

The subject matter at the heart of William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s original novel (and subsequent 1976 flick) would allow for a striking diatribe at Hollywood’s toxic sexism and ageism, and for that and more we’re pretty interested to see if the remake can get off the ground.

X-MEN’s Bryan Singer has been associated with the project, but more recently Nicolas Winding Refn and his perpetual muse Ryan Gosling have been attached. More as we hear it.
