Going way back to the days of the black and white Batman and Superman serials, then the 1970s’ Hulk and Spider-Man shows, then forward to more modern fare like SMALLVILLE and ARROW, superheroes have always had a special relationship with the television world. GOTHAM has already made its US debut, only last night THE FLASH premiered in the States, with ARROW returning for its third season in the US this evening, and then CONSTANTINE to follow and Supergirl and the Teen Titans amongst others eyed for a television audience next year. That’s just the DC properties. On the Marvel side, there’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Season 2 return and the 2015 debut of AGENT CARTER and those Netflix-exclusive shows. Now comes word that the famous X-Men team may be heading to the small screen.

Bleeding Cool is reporting that Marvel’s group of merry mutants could very well be one of the next in line to make the step to the world of television. The outlet claims that Fox is already well underway on work to bring Xavier’s gifted team to TV. No exact details are known at this stage, although speculation suggests that an official announcement on the show could be made as early as this week’s New York Comic-Con.

Our personal favourite small screen X-Men was the 1990s animated X-MEN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, although there have been several animated and live-action shows featuring members of the X-Men. Whilst the animated shows have generally fared well, 1996’s live-action GENERATION X only made it to the pilot stage, whilst THE MUTANT WATCH, a tie-in to Bryan Singer’s X-MEN, was merely a promotional tool for the cinematic X-verse. 2001 brought along MUTANT X, a three season show that seemed to make a conscious effort to keep itself away from the classic comic book characters, but this latest attempt would be hoping to fare better than any of the previous attempts at a live-action X-Men show.

Expect to hear more on this as it develops.
