Fans of iconic British comic book thug Judge Dredd have begun to campaign for a TV series. Fans behind the ‘Make a DREDD Sequel’ campaign for a follow-up to the 2012 movie starring Karl Urban are now gathering support for a TV show.

The model for TV series production is rapidly changing, and organisations such as Amazon, HBO, Netflix and even the BBC are moving rapidly to the online model. With the success of the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Man in the High Castle, surely it’s time to bring Dredd into our homes.

Some fans were given false hope earlier this year. An April Fools ‘prank’ on a film and TV news site which claimed that Netflix has picked up Dredd as a joke was misreported by bloggers and went viral. We aren’t sure what’s funny about a TV show featuring one of Britain’s best detectives, but this incident has seemingly renewed fan efforts to actually make it happen.

British comic book 2000AD, which like many brilliant sci-fi things launched in 1977, has been a source of inspiration for fans worldwide. Recent fan movies include Judge Minty and the forthcoming Strontium Dog short Search and Destroy. Both look amazing and have been produced on a micro-budget. We can see no reason why someone wouldn’t make a Dredd TV show.

The petition can be signed at www.2000ADonline.com/dreddsequel.

The campaign’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bringbackdredd now has more than 100,000 supporters, while Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby have both sent the campaign messages of support.

Jason Kingsley, co-owner of Rebellion and 2000 AD said, “Who amongst us wouldn’t want to see a DREDD series from Netflix or Amazon? I wish them all the best and thank them for keeping the faith. In the meantime, we’ve been doing – and will continue to do – all we can to give the fans what they want, which is more from the incredibly rich world of Judge Dredd.”
