Despite gestating in development hell for years, it looks as though the live-action redo of Mamoru Oshii’s seminal anime GHOST IN THE SHELL is most definitely happening.

It had been revealed that Scarlet Johansson was attached to the project, taking up the lead mantle of Motoko, with a supposed 2017 release. Now news comes that Johansson is indeed attached to the project, with SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN’s Rupert Sanders directing.

Speaking to Collider, Johansson revealed, “It’s happening” and “will be shooting the beginning of next year, so I think we start production January or February, and it’s me and Rupert; and that’s all I know.”

The original 1995 film is in its own right a masterpiece, and there’s little a live-action do-over could bring to the source material. White-washing the characters only adds insult to injury, but we’ll reserve judgement until the film is released on April 14th, 2017.
