Following on from previous reports that Legendary Pictures were about to land the rights to a live-action Pokémon movie, now comes an official announcement on just such a feature.

Legendary Entertainment and The Pokémon Company have announced that they’re set to develop a live-action movie franchise based on the Detective Pikachu character. Pikachu got the upgrade to Detective when the Detective Pikachu video game was released earlier this year. Production on this film is scheduled to start in early 2017.

The video game in question saw you and Pikachu solving a whole host of mysteries, so expect plenty of similar shenanigans when this live-action movie makes it to the big screen.

Distribution of Detective Pikachu will be handled by Universal Pictures outside of Japanese markets, with Toho handling the film and subsequent franchise in Japan.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
