Following on from the reveal of her casting earlier this month, it’s now being reported that Fan Bingbing has had to drop out of MEG due to scheduling conflicts.

Variety is reporting that the X-Men: Days of Future Past actress has had to depart the upcoming adaptation of Steve Alten’s MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror. Moving swiftly, Warner Brothers has replaced Bingbing with namesake Li Bingbing, best known to genre fans for Resident Evil: Retribution and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Li Binging joins a cast that currently includes Jason Statham, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose and Jessica McNamee.

The current word on the MEG adap is that it will focus on an international underwater program that comes under threat from an ominous and mysterious danger. Unfortunately for the workers based on this facility, they will be stranded at the bottom of the ocean and with a dangerous predator waiting to pounce. Statham will portray a former naval captain who is tasked with rescuing those in danger before it’s too late.

In case you’re not familiar with MEG, Steve Alten’s MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror was released in 1997 and has spawned several follow-ups, with the action focussing on the 80-foot megalodon and the tale often described as “Jurassic Park with a shark” as the California coast is terrorized by this ancient threat.

To be directed by John Turtletaub, MEG is currently set for a March 2nd, 2018 release.
