Lee Jung-Jae, star of the Netflix series Squid Game, is the latest to join the cast of the upcoming Star Wars series, The Acolyte.

He joins Amandla Stenberg and the recently-announced Jodie Turner-Smith. Leslye Headland serves as showrunner, writer and director on the series. Though character and casting details are being kept tightly under wraps, sources tell Deadline that the South Korean actor will play the male lead on the show.

The Acolyte is said to be a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era – which would place it some fifty years prior to the events of The Phantom Menace. In the Star Wars universe, an acolyte can refer to individuals with force abilities who learn from a more experienced Sith Lord.

The series is expected to begin production in London towards the end of autumn, with no word yet on any potential release date.

Lee Jung-Jae rose to international fame and critical acclaim with the Netflix phenomenon Squid Game last year, and looks to take home yet another award for his role in the dystopian series at the Emmy Awards ceremony come Monday 13th.
