Last week came word that cult favourite Labyrinth was to be remade. Yes, we were just as disappointed as you at that news. Well, it looks like “remake” was the wrong word, and instead we could be getting a “continuation” of what we saw in Jim Henson’s iconic 1986 movie.

The news last week, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, was that Guardians of the Galaxy’s Nicole Perlman was the one tasked with penning this apparent redo. Clarifying the whole affair, Perlman has taken to Twitter to clear a few things up.

Over the space of a few messages, Perlman said, “Henson Co & I started talking in late 2014, so the timing of these rumors is so upsetting. I would never seek to profit from Bowie’s death. Guys, please don’t fall for all the clickbait. No one is remaking Labyrinth. That movie is perfect as it is. Labyrinth is my favourite film from childhood, so I share your concerns that any continuation of the world be handled with love and respect.”

So, there is no remake on the table, but the use of the term “continuation” could be the key term here, plus the news that some sort of talks have been ongoing since 2014. The fact that the usually ever-reliable THR reported the initial news suggests that there’s certainly something to these stories, but rather than a remake it could be that the Labyrinth story may be furthered in another way.

As ever, expect more on this as and when it develops.
