We brought word last week that director James Gunn wanted Kurt Russell to play Star-Lord’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which was totally, totally an awesome idea in our book), and now the legendary Russell has confirmed that, yes, he has indeed had talks for the gig.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Russell revealed that he’s had some talks for the role of Peter Quill’s daddy dearest, but there’s a reason he’s yet to commit to the film. The actor revealed, “I literally got a phone call two days ago about this. I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t know anything about it. I’m one of the four idiots that’s never seen it. Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie, great characters.’ I don’t know it. So, I didn’t realise that the man had written and directed it. So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read it, and I have to watch the movie because I can’t bring anything for you. I’ve got nothing to offer here.’ So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do.”

Nothing to offer? You’re Kurt freakin’ Russell, one of the coolest, smoothest actors in the history of cinema. Here’s hoping Kurt gets up to speed on Guardians of the Galaxy and then agrees to sign on to play Quill’s father. On the topic of Star-Lord’s dad, director Gunn has previously revealed that it won’t be the same person who it is in the comic book world, ruling out J’Son.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently set for a May 5th, 2017 release.
