Earlier this year came word that KRYPTON, a show believed to focus on Superman’s home planet, was in the works. Now comes confirmation that Syfy is developing the series and that the action will actually focus on the Big Blue Boy Scout’s grandfather.

From DC Comics and Warner Horizon Television, the official blurb on the show reads:

“Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracised. This series follows the Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest superhero ever known.”

Interestingly enough, John Byrne did a late ‘80s miniseries called THE WORLD OF KRYPTON, which featured a version of Superman’s grandfather called Seyg-El (cheekily named after Supes’ co-creator Jerry Siegel). There’s no indication yet on whether that is the route that this latest DC-based show will take or not.

KRYPTON is the latest in an ever-expanding line of DC-based shows either on screens or in development. Currently adorning TV sets across the globe are The CW’s ARROW and THE FLASH, FOX’s GOTHAM and NBC’s CONSTANTINE, with CBS working on SUPERGIRL and TNT in the early stages of developing TITANS, based on the Teen Titans.

ONCE UPON A TIME’s Ian Goldberg is currently penning the pilot for KRYPTON, with THE DARK KNIGHT’s David Goyer on board to executive produce.

Expect more on this as it develops.
