Since news broke about Ben Affleck signing on to play the latest cinematic incarnation of Batman, we’ve been firmly on the Batfleck train. Now, with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman hitting screens in two months’ time, Kevin Smith has spoken out about how Affleck is set to deliver the definite Dark Knight.

Smith and Affleck are long-time buds, having worked together way back on Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, and briefly in Daredevil (in which Smith had a small role as a forensic assistant) and Clerks II, and from what he’s seen of Batman v Superman, Kev’s described Affleck’s take on the World’s Greatest Detective as the best we’ve seen so far.

Speaking to Variety, good ol’ Kev Smith said, “He’s the best-looking Batman we’ve ever seen. He’s moving the way he moves in the comic – he’s punching out two people in the span of six seconds. So Zack Snyder is kinda nailing that version.”

Switching over to the Bruce Wayne side of the character, Smith added, “The hardest thing to nail about Batman is Bruce Wayne, because that’s where you’ve got no mask, that’s where you’ve got to be a human being and not just somebody who’s punching people. But that dude is Bruce Wayne, so he’s born to play that role. Everything I’ve seen so far is phenomenal. I think he’ll be our best Batman.”

Affleck actually sought out the advice of Smith over a decade ago when he was offered the titular role in 2003’s Daredevil, at the time admitting he ideally wanted to play Batman. On that, Smith said, “I was like, ‘Dude, they’re never making another Batman movie! Tim Burton defined that shit! Joel Schumacher broke it and it’s never gonna happen again.”

Sadly, Daredevil would bomb at the box office and get largely slammed by fans and critics alike. To us, though, the film is actually far, far better than anyone gives it credit for when taken as Daredevil: Director’s Cut. Seriously, hunt down that cut of the film and it’s a genuinely good movie.

Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader is set to butt heads with Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits screens on March 25th. Expectation ahead of the film’s release is mixed, with some not exactly sold on the concept of the film or in the slightly crowded roster of characters (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Doomsday, and appearances from Cyborg, Aquaman, The Flash and possibly even Bizarro), but one thing seems certain: Affleck as the Dark Knight looks set to triumph, with Warner Brothers so impressed with his turn here that they’re already talking about three solo movies for Bats, not to mention confirmed appearances from the World’s Greatest Detective in Suicide Squad and Snyder’s two-part Justice League.
