Whilst he’s currently tinkering with his Great North trilogy, Kevin Smith has revealed that he’ll soon be making a full-time trip to TV with a new take on The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.

Smith broke the scoop on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, saying, “It’s one of my favourite movies in the world and largely responsible for the weird shit that I make, because that movie was supposed to be one thing but it did it in another way. It just did it very off-centre.”

On what he has in mind for the series, Smith added, “Basically, you just do the entire movie for Season 1, and then Season 2 you finally do the sequel we’ve all dreamed about: Buckaroo Banzai Vs. The World Crime League.”

The original Buckaroo Banzai movie debuted back in 1984, starring the brilliant ensemble of Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Clancy Brown, Christopher Lloyd and Jeff Goldblum. The film itself is all kinds of bonkers (in the best possible way) and sees Weller playing the titular Dr. Buckaroo Banzai, a man whose many talents include being a neurosurgeon, a physicist, a test pilot and, of course, a rock musician. Using his vast skills, it’s down to Banzai to save the world against Planet 10’s Red Lectoids. The original movie absolutely bombed upon release but has gone on to be a much-revered cult classic.

Good ol’ Kev Smith confirmed that he has indeed signed a deal to develop this new series and that it’s now just a case of finding a network home for the show. He also revealed that he’s already reached out to Earl Mac Rauch, writer of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, to help with this new take on the property, plus he’d also love to get Peter Weller back into the fold, although this time as the voice of the unseen rogue Hanoi Xan.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
