Following the raptor-ous reception (sorry) received by Jurassic World, it’s no surprise whatsoever that a sequel is on the way. Universal have announced a follow-up to their surprise mega-smash hit, to be released in 2018.

A tad more surprising is that stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are both set to return (apologies if you’re one of the two people on the planet who haven’t yet seen it – yep, they both survive). If you’ve seen Jurassic World, there’s seeds planted there which suggest the sequel might go in a different direction, finally leaving the world’s most dangerous theme park behind and exploring the larger, global implications of genetically-engineered species. How the two stars would fit into this isn’t apparently obvious, but we’re pretty sure it’ll involve running away from dinosaurs, wisecracking and having the occasional ill-timed kiss, all of which they’re more than adept at.

Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, will again co-write the script but has previously stated he won’t be returning to direct. Steven Spielberg, director of the first two instalments, will again executive produce.

It’s unlikely the fifth instalment in the dino franchise will equal Jurassic World’s success, which has taken everyone by surprise. To date it’s grossed over $1.5 billion and this week overtook The Avengers to become the third biggest film of all time (right behind James Cameron’s two worst films), easily passing both Furious 7 and Age Of Ultron to become 2015’s biggest film. You could say it’s rex-ed the competition (that’s enough crap dino puns! –  Ed).

Jurassic World 2 (or Jurassic Park 5, take your pick) opens on June 22nd, 2018.
