Nearly as soon as Jurassic World hit screens, director Colin Trevorrow revealed that he wouldn’t be returning for any further Jurassic outings at this stage, largely down to the fact that he’ll instead be helming Star Wars: Episode IX. At that point, Bayona was the first name to be suggested for the gig.

Instead, though, all chances of him taking charge of this fifth Jurassic movie were instantly shot down for he was committed to directing World War Z 2. When Bayona departed that film earlier this year, those rumours of him handling the Jurassic World sequel once again began bubbling. And now, here we are, with Bayona, the man responsible for directing the likes of The Impossible and The Orphanage, officially announced via Twitter as directing the Jurassic World follow-up:

For this next Jurassic entry, Colin Trevorrow will actually be back to handle the scripting duties along with Derek Connolly. Both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be returning as well.

Jurassic World proved one of the biggest success stories in recent history, taking home a whopping $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. This marks the film as the fourth highest grossing in history behind Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

At present, the Jurassic World sequel is currently set for a June 22nd, 2018 release.
