Joss Whedon’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had looked to have come to an end after last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and now the writer/director has confirmed that he is indeed done with Marvel Studios for now. Of course, this is the man who was involved in near-enough all of the MCU efforts until recently, acting as a go-to person and overseer of all things MCU.

Speaking at a Q&A at Oxford Union, Whedon confirmed, “I’ve gone off the reservation for a while. It was five years that I was working on either Avengers of S.H.I.E.L.D. That was an enormous gift they gave me; they handed me several hundreds of millions of dollars and said ‘do what you do,’ which is very rare and I was very lucky. At the same time, it’s important for me not just to have my own thing and do something smaller, but also to create a new challenge for myself because I will start to repeat myself.”

When pushed as to how “off the reservation” he is, he added, “No, you know, I was their sort of consigliere for a while… but I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron and sort of know what when it was done, I was just going to stop, so I made a completely clean break.”

Given how involved Whedon has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, it remains to be seen how the MCU copes going forward. Then again, in fairness to Marvel Studios and Disney, they have plenty of plans in place right through until 2020 and beyond, and they’ve yet to hit any major roadblocks or issues with any of their films, despite whatever initial reservations may have been in place ahead of certain films’ releases.

Here’s an idea though, how about Warner Brothers bring Whedon in to help out with the DC Cinematic Universe that’s set to get massively expanded over the next few years? After all, this is a man who had spent years trying to get a Wonder Woman movie off the ground.
