This weekend has brought now that director Josh Trank has departed the Star Wars universe. Trank was previously on board to direct one of the standalone “Anthology” movies.
After being surprisingly absent from Anaheim’s recent Star Wars Celebration, Trank and Disney/Lucasfilm have parted ways. The official line being given is that the director is looking to pursue “other creative projects”. But The Hollywood Reporter has the real scoop on just why Trank will not be heading to a galaxy far, far away.
Despite illness being cited as the reason for Trank’s absence from Star Wars Celebration, THR claims that Disney actually asked the director to stay away from the event whilst they decided on whether or not to actually move forward with Trank helming one of their films. The decision was then made to let Trank go, with his behaviour on the set of the upcoming Fantastic Four redo said to be a major factor in the decision.
Whilst shooting Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox, Trank’s behaviour has been described as “erratic” and that he was “very isolated”. In fact, a Fox spokesperson even described the FF process as “there were definitely some bumps in the road”. Then there were also the FF reshoots that took place a few weeks back, which saw producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker heavily involved, and Avatar’s Stephen Rivkin was even brought in to help with certain editing matters.
Trank also had similar issues on Chronicle, where producers also had to step in to make sure that the project got completed. There’s no doubt that Trank is a talent, but it appears that he isn’t the easiest to work with. It also didn’t help his Star Wars cause that Kinberg, who apparently had to take a break from X-Men: Apocalypse to focus on getting Fantastic Four finished, is also a producer for the Star Wars movie that Trank was to direct.
So that’s it, Josh Trank is no longer attached to the second of the Star Wars Anthology movies. With him also at present due to direct Fantastic Four 2, it’ll be interesting to see if 20th Century Fox end up making any changes in director.
Fantastic Four is currently set for an August 6th, 2015 UK release.
