The Joker sequel, which for a long time was referred to simply as Joker 2, will be released on October 4th, 2024 – exactly five years after the first film was released.

Todd Phillips is back in the director’s seat and co-writes the script with Scott Silver, recently revealing on social media that their new project would be titled Joker: Folie à Deux. That French subtitle translates to ‘madness for two’ and describes a shared delusional disorder between two people.

Joaquin Phoenix is due to reprise his role as Arthur Fleck/Joker. At the same time, Lady Gaga (whose casting was only just confirmed by Phillips and Gaga, after months of speculation) is also rumoured to be taking on the role of Harley Quinn, the Arkham Asylum psychiatrist who falls in love with the Joker and becomes his partner in crime. Her casting makes sense because Joker 2 is said to be a musical, though exactly how that element will be incorporated is yet unclear given that the first film was a dark and gritty drama.

Things aren’t so merry elsewhere in the DC universe, however, as Warner Bros. recently chose to shelve the Leslie Grace-fronted Batgirl feature, despite the project being well into postproduction.

In any case, check out Phillips’ release date announcement video below:
