There’s no debating that Universal are bringing in the big names for their relaunched shared monster universe. With Tom Cruise on board for The Mummy and Angelina Jolie eyed for The Bride of Frankenstein, now comes word that Johnny Depp has signed on to star in The Invisible Man.

Deadline reports that Depp will play the Dr. Jack Griffin role, the scientist who ends up turning himself invisible and then going a bit bonkers. There’s still no news, however, on who will write or direct this new Invisible Man, itself a story that began life way back in 1897 as a H.G. Wells novel before first being turned into a big screen movie in 1933. That Claude Rains-starrer would then be followed up with The Invisible Man Returns, The Invisible Woman, Invisible Agent and The Invisible Man’s Revenge – all of which were put out within a matter of years, fully milking the property and concept for all it was worth. The Invisible Man would also appear in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein before then playing a larger role in Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man.

At present, Universal are looking to relaunch their classic monster properties as part of a new cinematic universe. First up will be Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, set to star Kingsman’s Sofia Boutella as the titular monster going up against Tom Cruise. That film is set for a June 2017 release, with a plan in place to follow it with several other monster outings. Fargo’s Noah Hawley is currently writing a mystery monster movie for Universal, Prisoners’ Aaron Guzikowski is believed to be penning a redo of The Wolfman, and there’s also another mystery monster project penciled in for a March 2018 release. Whether that March ’18 release ends up being the Johnny Depp-starring The Invisible Man, we’ll have to wait and see.
