Last week brought news that John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China was to be remade, bringing a mightily mixed reaction along with it. Now comes word that Carpenter himself is wanted for the redo.
With Dwayne Johnson signed on to play Jack Burton, the role made famous by Kurt Russell in the 1986 movie, the actor has spoken to Entertainment Weekly at his wish to get Carpenter involved somehow.
Johnson said, “I loved reading the reactions from the fans, that they were so polarised – I’m in the same way. My response is: know that I come to the project with nothing but love and respect for the original, which is why we want to bring on John Carpenter.”
The Rock went on, “I loved the original when I was younger and I loved the main character – all the characters. It felt like if we surrounded ourselves with the right group of people, the right writers who loved the movie too and wanted to honour it, bring on John Carpenter in some capacity. If we did that, then we have a shot at hopefully making something good. Let’s see what feels good, what we can come up with and then go from there. As we write it, if the whole thing starts to stink up, then we thank everybody for their efforts and accept this just couldn’t make it.”
Now Dwayne Johnson is one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood these days, but he’s also a huge fan of the original movie and somebody who is savvy enough to realise that bringing in John Carpenter would be the perfect tonic to quell the naysayers. Whether anything comes of it or if Carpenter has any interest, that remains to be seen.Expect to hear more on the Big Trouble in Little China remake as and when it develops.
