After the likes of Jared Leto, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch have all been linked to the role of Marvel’s Doctor Strange, there’s a strong rumour from The Wrap that claims three-time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix has suddenly come under serious consideration for the role of the Sorcerer Supreme. It’s still a rumour at this stage and no deal has been signed, but certain speculation claims that the announcement of Phoenix’s addition to the MCU could come at tomorrow night’s Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

The character of Doc Strange debuted way back in 1963’s STRANGE TALES #110, having been created by the duo of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. He was initially a neurosurgeon but lost precision in his hands due to a car accident. In an effort to regain his former skills, he ends up on a route that leads to him becoming one of the most powerful and insightful characters in the Marvel world. Interestingly enough, Strange was name-dropped in this year’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.

Not release date has yet been given to the Stephen Strange-centric movie, but SINISTER’s Scott Derrickson will direct from a script penned by Jon Spaihts.

Expect more on this as it develops.
