With Rian Johnson to direct STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII and it now revealed that Gareth Edwards’ spin-off movie will be titled ROGUE ONE, speculation is starting up again on just who may be helming EPISODE IX.

Initially it was presumed that Johnson would be handling the film, but Latino Review is reporting that the current frontrunner for the gig is indeed J.J. Abrams, the director of this year’s STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS. This is purely a rumour at this stage, but it’s believed that the internal feedback at Disney is extremely positive based on what’s been seen of EPISODE VII.

Abrams himself has talked several times about how gruelling the whole process of making THE FORCE AWAKENS has been, and it’s been reported that he’s had his share of fallings out with some of those in power at Disney, but it looks like the director could very well be returning to a galaxy far, far away.

As mentioned, treat this as purely speculation for now, and we all know how J.J. Abrams and his people like to deny things up until the very last minute.

STAR WARS: EPISODE IX will be released in 2019.
