When Jeremy Renner took over headlining duties of the BOURNE franchise with THE BOURNE LEGACY, it was presumed that Matt Damon’s time with the series had come to an end. Renner’s Aaron Cross was then geared up to get his own sequel, although recent rumours suggest that Damon and director Paul Greengrass are about to return for another Jason Bourne-centred film; a film that has even been suggested will replace Renner’s sequel. Whilst promoting KILL THE MESSENGER to MovieWeb, Renner has been addressing the situation.

When asked on whether he hopes Damon does return to star alongside him in the franchise that began way back in 2002, Renner said, “That’s my hope. That’s my dream. Will it happen? I do not know. Last I heard is that Paul and Matt have cracked an idea, a reason to continue the BOURNE series.”

He added, “We’re still working on the Aaron Cross section of that and the worlds will definitely – hopefully – collide and they’re still part of each other. I think it makes it really exciting that I think even Universal is sort of like ‘this is really fantastic news,’ because now it’s kind of like the Marvel model where they have two standalones and then come back and meet each other.”

Once this latest rumour of a Damon return surfaced, it was suggested that a Jason Bourne feature could swipe the July 15th, 2016 release date that has been pencilled in for the Renner-starring sequel. Given how the non-Damon entry in the franchise only scored $276 million at the box office, compared to $443 million for the last Damon starrer, it’s easy to see why the powers that be are so keen to jump at the chance of getting Matt Damon back involved with the series. Now it just remains to be seen whether, if Damon does return, he’ll be featured alongside Renner’s Aaron Cross.

Expect more on this as it develops.
