With END OF WATCH’s David Ayer recently confirmed to be helming Warner Brothers’ villain-centric SUICIDE SQUAD, now comes a rather huge casting rumour. Previously reports have suggested the Warners and DC have had some form of talks with Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Will Smith, but The Wrap is now reporting that the Academy Award-winning Jared Leto is being lined up to play The Joker in the movie. It’s also believed that this was the same role that Gosling was being lined up for.

Whether Leto ends up playing the role or not, it seems pretty definite that the film will see a new cinematic Clown Prince of Crime, which would mark a return to the big screen for a character last seen played by Heath Ledger in THE DARK KNIGHT. Of course, the issue of a new Joker was always going to be a sensitive, problematic one after Ledger’s passing, but this current DC Cinematic Universe exists completely separate to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. And just as Ben Affleck is this world’s Batman, it means that a new Mr J was always likely to be a possibility at some point.

As for SUICIDE SQUAD, it’s believed that the film’s principal villainous team will be made up of Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Blockbuster, Multiplex, Jaculi, Mindboggler and Vixen. Additionally, Jesse Eisenberg is in talks for his Lex Luthor to appear in the film.

SUICIDE SQUAD is currently set for an August 5th, 2016 release.
