Last month brought word that Sony Pictures was looking to develop a live-action adaptation of classic anime ROBOTECH. It was believed that the project was something that was being looked at to do sooner rather than later, and now comes word on a possible director for the adaptation.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that James Wan is in talks to helm the film, which would be just one of a plethora of projects that he’s involved in. Wan made his name with the likes of SAW and THE CONJURING, and his FAST & FURIOUS 7 (or FAST 7 or FURIOUS 7 depending on your market) is currently dominating box offices across the globe. He’s presently working on THE CONJURING 2 in the UK, and it was only a matter of weeks ago that he was said to be in talks with Warner Brothers about helming AQUAMAN. Then there’s the prospect of the recently-announced FAST & FURIOUS 8. So yeah, definitely a busy, busy guy.

ROBOTECH itself is a classic anime that first appeared back in the 1980s, becoming an edited mixture of THE SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS, SUPER DIMENSION CAVALRY SOUTHERN CROSS and GENESIS CLIMBER MOSPEADA. Premise-wise, ROBOTECH is set at a place in time with the Earth has developed giant robots from alien technology, using this new tech to defend themselves against alien invasions.

In terms of Sony, Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are to produce the franchise, with 300’s Michael Gordon penning the screenplay. Doug Belgrad, Michael De Luca and Frank Agrama will oversee proceedings, with executive producing credits for Jehan Agrama and original rights holder Frank Agrama.

Expect more on this as it develops.
