Earlier this week came news that James Wan and Leigh Whannell were being lined up for a possible return to the SAW franchise, but now comes confirmation that Wan will be helming THE CONJURING 2. What makes this so surprising is that the writer/director claimed to be done with the horror genre after last year’s THE CONJURING, instead taking on high-action fodder like FAST AND FURIOUS 7.

Speaking to Deadline, Wan revealed, “It was during the editing of FAST AND FURIOUS 7 that my brain started sparking ideas for the CONJURING sequel. Taking a break from horror has allowed me to be creatively rejuvenated. I’m excited to tell the story of the next case-file of Ed and Lorraine Warren and expand on this world we’ve created.”

Whilst we’re no big fans of the FAST AND FURIOUS series, we’re more than happy if one of those fast car-type movies was needed in order to get Wan’s horror juices flowing once more. This is a man, after all, who is part-responsible for the likes of SAW, the INSIDIOUS movies and the aforementioned THE CONJURING, often working with long-time partner Leigh Whannell. To many, THE CONJURING is one of the best horror movies of the last decade, so a sequel in the same ilk would be hugely appreciated by fans of the genre.

Additionally, it’s said that part of Wan’s new deal with New Line Cinema, an arm of Warner Brothers, is that he’ll be responsible for developing and producing modestly-budgeted movies in the hope of turning over a huge profit on them. Considering his past with the movies we’ve already referenced, that comes as no massive surprise. In some other interesting news, it’s also been teased that Wan could even work on a superhero movie at some point. This particular news was hinted at by New Line’s Toby Emmerich, who said, “New Line has always been a big believer in great filmmakers emerging from the horror genre, and he has the potential to grow like Frank Darabont did, from writing A NIGHTMARE AN ELM STREET 3 to writing and directing THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. James will make an important movie for New Line and Warner Brothers or DC, and that is definitely part of the plan and a reason for bringing him into the family. He’s the only overall director with a deal here, because we see him as a class of one.”

Interesting news, indeed. Whether Wan does end up helming a DC movie, that remains to be seen. What we do know, though, is that THE CONJURING 2 will be released at some point in 2016.
