While James Gunn has recently confirmed he’ll be writing and directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he’s now moved to confirm that he’ll be working with Marvel Studios to develop their Cosmic Universe post-Guardians 3.

Speaking to IGN, Gunn explained, “We talk about it all the time. It’s already part of what I’m doing with Marvel and the conversations that Kevin and I have every day. When we’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and that story, that’s a story that will lead to other stories. It’s innate to the DNA that that’s the end of a trilogy but it’s the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic Universe. That’s part of what I’m doing now.”

Right now, details on the Cosmic Universe corner of the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe are scarce, but at least we now know that Gunn will be looking to help Kevin Feige on further developing that element of the MCU.

Where Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is concerned, that will be set years after the events of Guardians 2, and that threequel will bring a close to the story of the particular line-up of the Guardians team that features Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. The plan is to use that film to then launch further movies for other Marvel characters of an intergalactic persuasion. For us, we’re just hoping and crossing all things crossable that a Nova-driven picture comes out of all of this.

At present, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has taken over $800 million globally. Up next for the team are appearances in both Avengers: Infinity War and its follow-up.
