Following last week’s reveal that James Cameron was now working on four (because three clearly isn’t enough…) Avatar sequels, the legendary filmmaker has moved to provide a further update on the franchise.

Revealing to Famous Monsters of Filmland that he’ll be shooting all four movies in one go, Cameron said, “It’s really all one big production. It’s more the way you would shoot a miniseries. So we’ll be shooting across all simultaneously. So Monday I might be doing a scene from Movie Four, and Tuesday I’m doing a scene from Movie One. We’re working across, essentially, eight hours of story. It’s going to be a big challenge to keep it all fixed in our minds, exactly where we are, across that story at any given point. It’s a saga. It’s like doing all three Godfather films at the same time.”

He then added, “On the new Avatar films, I’m actually going to shoot more real-world stuff. It may only be there as an example from which we then generate CG, or we may actually integrate some of those photographic elements. But I want more photography.”

So, working on four Avatar movies at the same time? That certainly sounds a bit hectic.

Cameron’s 2009 Avatar currently stands as the highest-grossing movie of all-time, with the director’s Titanic in second place on that list.

Production on Avatar 2 is due to start in New Zealand later this month ahead of a December 2018 release. Avatar 3 will then arrive in 2020, Avatar 4 in 2022, and Avatar 5 in 2023.
