When singer/actress Zendaya joined Spider-Man: Homecoming, all that we knew was that she’d be playing a lead female role known simply as “Michelle”. Well, it turns out that Michelle may not actually be Michelle at all…

The Wrap is reporting that Zendaya’s real role in Homecoming is none other than Mary Jane Watson. This has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios or Sony Pictures, so take it with a pinch of salt for now. That said, The Wrap is usually exceptionally reliable with their scoops.

MJ, of course, was famously played by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi’s Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man trilogy. She was also played by Shailene Woodley in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, although her scenes were ultimately cut, meaning we never got to see her turn up opposite Andrew Garfield’s Web-head.

As for Mary Jane as a comic book character, she debuted back in 1965 as the niece of Aunt May’s neighbour. After eventually starting to date Peter Parker, the pair would finally tie the knot in 1987’s The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21. In a move that still leaves a bad taste in the mouth of many comic book readers, Joe Quesada made the move to cancel out the marriage during 2008’s One More Day arc in which Peter agreed to have his marriage to MJ completely erased from existence in order to make a deal with Mephisto that would save Aunt May’s life.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Zendaya is joined by the likes of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man, Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes/The Vulture, and Michael Chernus’ Phineas Mason/The Tinkerer.

To be directed by Cop Car’s Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently set for a July 7th, 2017 release.
