The upcoming STAR WARS trilogy is set to reinvigorate the cinematic side of the franchise since the tepid prequel trilogy. It’ll also usher in several stand-alone spin-off films that’ll help pad out the galaxy after the expanded universe was deemed non-canonical.

Rumours have been rife, with Bobba Fett, Han Solo and X-Wing spin-offs at the forefront of the rumour mill. Unsurprisingly, fans (and Ewan McGregor himself) have expressed their desire to see an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film. If a new report is to be believed, the character’s phenomenal success has led to Lucasfilm developing a spin-off for the bearded Jedi wise man.

From a source close to production on STAR WARS VII, Obi-Wan will be central to one of these films. While still only a rumour, it is believed that production has begun on the spin-off film. The source has revealed, ‘I’ve heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works. For the spinoff movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters. But I’m hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website, etc.) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie.

Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) are already slated to helm two of the standalone films. More details as they develop, every parsec of the way.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII opens December 15th 2015, and the untitled STAR WARS spin-off movie hits the following year on December 16th.
