Irwin “88” Keyes, the memorable character actor from countless movies and television shows has left us due to complications from acromegaly, the same disease from which the classic actor Rondo Hatton suffered.

Born in New York City and growing up in Amityville, Mr. Keyes gravitated towards acting in high school and college where he developed his craft later appearing in a variety of films in minor parts, most notably in The Warriors where he played the police officer who hits James Remar (Ajax) with a nightstick.

Years later, he would appear as a regular on the TV series The Jeffersons as Mojelewski where his catch phrase, “Hi, remember me?” caught on with fans of the show that even produced a poster with him and his famous line.

Other parts included were in Tales from the Crypt, Police Squad, Oblivion and both Flintstones feature films as Joe Rockhead.

Most notably, he played the creepy clown alongside Sid Haig’s Captain Spaulding in House of 1000 Corpses.

STARBURST’s Whitney Scott Bain remembers: “When I got my first apartment, Irwin Keyes was my neighbour. Despite always portraying bad guys or likable thugs, he was one of the nicest people you could meet. A big fan of the classic movies, we’d talk about films, scripts and life in general. He also had a great sense of humour and was always there if you needed a ride or help with anything. Truly, a good guy who will be missed.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
