Last year, Roland Emmerich regularly talked about how he had plans for both an INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 and INDEPENDENCE DAY 3. That idea was quickly put to bed, with 20th Century Fox instead more keen to just do one sequel for now. Then things stalled. All has been quiet on any possible sequel for the last few months, but now comes word, via Deadline, that Fox has finally given the okay for things to start moving forward on INDEPENDENCE DAY 2.

It’s believed that the sequel is to start production in May of next year, with the once-planned June 24th, 2016 release date now back on the table. The next stage is to finalise a deal for Emmerich to direct the follow-up to his 1996 blockbuster that took home over $817 million at the global box office.

Near-enough as soon as the film was first seriously discussed last year, it was said that Will Smith wouldn’t be returning for the sequel. This is still set to be the case, although Bill Pullman is likely to be involved.

Expect more on this as it develops.
