Whilst a lot of eyes are on the upcoming big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, grabbing less attention is the previously confirmed Dark Tower TV series. Well, now comes an update on just how that will tie in with the big screen action.

Previously, it had been reported that the series will somehow tie to the upcoming movie, and new co-writer and producer Akiva Goldsman has revealed how. Speaking to Deadline, he enthused, “The first episode of a show has been written, and we hope to retain Ron Howard’s original idea to mix platforms, something that seemed revolutionary 10 years ago but now is something that others have done. Idris for sure is part of this, and if the movie is Roland Deschain the Gunslinger, the show is his origin story, based on the fourth novel in the series, Wizard and Glass.”

As alluded to there, Idris Elba is co-headlining the movie as the aforementioned Gunslinger, starring opposite Matthew McConaughey’s Man in Black. Interestingly, the cinematic Dark Tower won’t be a flat-out direct adaptation of any of King’s written works, instead, as per King himself, it will be “a canon continuation” of what we’ve seen in the novels. Regardless, at least we now know that Elba will be back to star in the TV series whenever that rolls around.

For next month’s The Dark Tower, the synopsis reads:

The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black, determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle.

On board to join Elba and McConaughey for the movie are the likes of Jackie Earle Haley, Tom Taylor, Kathryn Winnick, Abbey Lee, and Fran Kranz. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, The Dark Tower will hit cinemas worldwide from August 4th.
