Last month brought word that Matthew McConaughey was being eyed for one of the leads in the upcoming big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, and today sees Idris Elba similarly being lined up for the film.

On the McConaughey front, last month saw conflicting stories on just which role he was being lined up for, either the good guy of the tale, Roland Deschain/The Gunslinger, or the bad guy of the tale, Randall Flag/The Man in Black. This latest story, courtesy of Deadline, reports that Elba is the current frontrunner to play Roland Deschain, meaning McConaughey is in the frame for the villain of the film.

The basic premise of King’s Dark Tower, which encompasses eight novels and even ties-in with other books, follows The Gunslinger on his quest towards a mysterious tower in a world gone to hell. As well as a big screen movie, there’s also a tie-in TV series in development as well.

Nikolaj Arcel, best known for helming the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and A Royal Affair, is to direct the big screen Dark Tower, which has a screenplay in place from A Beautiful Mind’s Akiva Goldsman and The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Jeff Pinkner, and will be produced by Ron Howard.

The Dark Tower is currently set for a January 13th, 2017 release.
