With Brighton’s International Comic Expo 2017 Summer Special to be here before we know it – June 10th, to be precise – the fan favourite ICE has some huge names attached to it, particularly the legendary Pat Mills and the iconic Dave Gibbons.
Mills is often dubbed the Godfather of British comics, and rightly so, for this is the man who created 2000AD, which, of course, would feature a certain Judge Joseph Dredd. As well as his work on Judge Dredd, in amongst his most noted other works Mills penned stories for the likes of Slaine and Nemesis the Warlock before co-creating Marshal Law, and then moving on to pen Requiem Vampire Knight. So impressive was his work on anti-war series Charley’s War that it’s actually been the subject of some major exhibitions in French war museums over the years, and he has been recognised for his contribution to pop culture by being made an honorary professor by Liverpool University. More recently, Accident Man, which Mills co-created with Tony Skinner, is in the process of being adapted as a big screen Scott Adkins-starring movie.
Much like Pat Mills, Dave Gibbons is someone who won’t need any real introduction to longtime comic book fans – but we’ll give it a go, either way. Gibbons is a huge favourite of many fans, with him also having made some major waves for his dynamic artwork for 2000AD. Having made a name for himself on these shores, Gibbons has since gone on to write and/or draw the likes of Doctor Who, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Doctor Strange, Captain America, Aliens, Predator, and famously worked with Alan Moore on Watchmen; a tale that is often revered as the very best graphic novel/comic story of all time by some. As well as Watchmen winning a whole host of praise, so too did The Originals, Gibbons’ autobiographical graphic novel that nabbed him a 2005 Eisner Award. After that, Gibbons continued to win further praise for his work on Mark Millar’s beloved The Secret Service (which was famously adapted for the cinematic Kingsman).
