We totally know what you were doing last summer. You were picking up your regular copy of Starburst Magazine, of course. But elsewhere, in the present day, Deadline brings word that 1997’s I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER is the next movie to be rebooted. Yep, we groaned also…

For what it was, Jim Gillespie’s ’97 effort was a decent film for its time even if it was nothing ground-breaking. With that film based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name, this latest effort has Mike Flanaghan, best known for directing OCULUS, on board to write and produce. He’ll produce with partner Jeff Howard and the original movie’s Neil Moritz.

The first movie was penned by Kevin Williamson, a writer who was red hot at that time, and starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe. After the film took over $100 million, a sequel followed in the form of I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. Several years later came the direct-to-video I’LL ALWAYS KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, which seemed to struggle with whether it was a continuation, a redo, or a completely fresh story.

In case you missed it, the basic premise of the novel and the original movie focussed on a group of teens who accidentally kill somebody. A year later, the group start to receive mysterious notes before they are all offed one-by-one by an unknown killer with a giant hook.

To be developed by Sony, expect to hear more on this latest reboot/remake/reimagining as it develops.
