The 74th World Science Fiction Convention, MidAmeriCon II, announced the winners of the 2016 Hugo Awards this Saturday. The ceremony was hosted by Pat Cadigan and Jan Siegel.

Casual readers may be amused to know that stunt nomination, Space Raptor Butt Invasion by Chuck Tingle did not win Best Short Story. Chuck has taken this defeat with his trademark wit and grace.

The Hugo Awards has been running since 1953 and are tied into the annual Worldcon events. As the name suggests, Worldcon is a huge book event that travels around the world (including much of North America). Regular attendees (known as members) tend to be affluent, broadly read and widely travelled. Until recently, the annual nominee list reflected this.

This year’s crop of nominations was marred by fringe interest groups exploiting loopholes in the award’s rules to put their own niche works into the list of finalists. Fans responded by nominating certain categories as ‘No Award’. These exploits are in the process of being closed.

The full breakdown of the voting statistics can be found here, and the official Hugo Awards website is here.
