Trashing your hometown in the name of quality sci-fi is a tradition that goes back to H. G. Wells and the Martian conquest of the Home Counties. So we’re delighted to inform you of Bristol’s imminent demise in the 10-part web series, Horizon. We think you might like this one.

A bloody great spaceship has appeared over Bristol with unknown intentions but we’ll take a punt their not here to watch Rovers. Five people try to flee the panic-gripped city only to be obstructed by looters, inevitable military intervention and, we suspect, the city’s notorious public transport system. Will they escape? Just what are those aliens up to? And why on earth would they want to do it in Bristol?

Horizon is brought to us by the Bristol-based team of Paul Dudbridge, Simon Pearce and Chris Marshfield. You might recall us recommending Simon Pearce’s excellent micro-budget horror-flick Judas Ghost a while back, but Horizon was made for practically nothing and filmed in a fortnight. That’s most definitely doing it the hard way when you’re riffing on the likes of Independence Day and District 9.  Nevertheless, we’ve seen a fair bit of Horizon and as well as being rather good, it looks like they’ve pulled off the looking-more-expensive-than-it-is trick again. Planes falling out of the sky onto iconic 19th century tourist attractions have never looked quite so satisfying. H. G. Wells would most certainly have approved.

The first episode will be shown from 8pm on the Monday October 5th here with the following parts showing from the following nine consecutive nights. In the meantime you can see the trailer and the countdown (should you wish to see a countdown).

Simon Pearce and Paul Dudbridge will be the focus of our Independents Day feature in issue 419.
