Studio Ghibli’s latest project THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA has spread its ethereal wings and released a short list of actors who are to voice characters for the English version. These include James Caan, Lucy Liu, James Marsden, Oliver Platt, Mary Steenburgen and teenage heavyweight Chloe Grace Moretz.

The news of Moretz’s casting is a delightful and bold decision from the studio who are known to fill their mystical universes with Hollywood’s most interesting talent (revisit the wonders of HOWLS MOVING CASTLE, where Billy Crystal voices a fire spirit and even during PORCO ROSSO, the Japanese behemoths enlisted the help of none other than Bruce Wayne himself, Mr. Michael Keaton).

Adapted from ‘The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter’, this fresh outing for the studio follows the adventures of a tiny girl discovered inside a stalk of bamboo.  Once again we can notice a particular relationship with nature that Ghibli so beautifully envisions throughout their films and here within their world we are time and time again, left breathless.

The decision on Moretz’s part to become a piece of Ghibli’s rich and otherworldly puzzle is a great one to say the least, and this will breath unique life into her already impressive career. The KICK-ASS actress however, will not be directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, who officially retired after directing THE WIND RISES which was released last year.

Expect a release for THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA later this year. In the meantime, here’s the original Japanese trailer…
