Guy Ritchie has been tapped to direct the upcoming live-action remake of Hercules, reports Deadline, reteaming with Disney following the 2019 remake of Aladdin.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callaham penned a first draft of the script, while the studio is currently searching for writers. The Russo brothers are also attached to produce.

The original 1997 animated film offered a musical retelling of the Greek legend of Hercules, in which the demigod must save Olympus from the God of the Underworld, Hades. No information has been revealed as to whether this remake will also be a musical, who might be cast in the lead role (perhaps a return by Dwayne Johnson?), nor when we might expect the feature to make it to screens.

This remake is just the latest in a string of attempts to revive animated Disney classics as live-action blockbusters. Rachel Zegler is already set to portray Snow White in Marc Webb‘s retelling that also stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, while Halle Bailey, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy star in the studio’s The Little Mermaid adaptation releasing next year.
